Black House is a two-toned residence that comprises two levels located in the neighbourhood of City Bell in La Plata, a town south of Buenos Aires. The ground floor is formed by an exposed concrete shell that measures 13 metres by 13 metres, while the upper portion is clad with planks of charred wood.

We used a dark palette to showcase the natural landscape; wood recovered from local supplier underwent Yakisugi – a Japanese technique for weatherproofing by charring with fire – along with smoke brick from the region to harmonize the construction with its environment, trying to blend the house as a shadow among in the green surroundings.
the house was constructed using a lightweight steel frame on a piled slab. The steelwork was prefabricated as a series of portal frames that were craned down the alley and site-welded together. Given that every inch in such a narrow space was valuable we chose to fully weld the connections and express the frame internally, even utilising the depth of the steels to maximise the space.

The original brick master´s house was a typical portico country style with a pitched roof. Portico attached to the longitudinal main volume was a distinctive and practical feature on the interface of the exterior and interior of the house. Apart from the natural protection of this frequented zone, it regulates different effects of summer and winter sunshine energy on the mass of the masonry.

The design of the house is inspired by the Nordic tradition of allotment houses: Small self-built wooden houses often built in recycled materials.
