art preserve

Tres Birds Workshop

“The Art Preserve is based on a responsive model that is reflected in the architecture of the building and ongoing commissioning of work by contemporary artists,” explained Amy Horst, associate director of the John Michael Kohler Arts Center, in a statement. “The experience is one that will evolve and change in response to our audience input and needs.”

passivhaus detailing and design

British architectural technologist and author Emma Walshaw of First in Architecture, whose new book Understanding Passivhaus – A Simple Guide to Passivhaus Detailing and Design forms a comprehensive resource on the subject.

Walshaw’s book goes far beyond the usual summaries of the Passivhaus approach, including in-depth technical guidance, CAD drawings and even 3D models of key details needed to create an exemplary Passivhaus structure. These drawing and models are downloadable in DWG and SKP formats for all architects and students that purchase the book, allowing them to study the details from every angle.

villa fjeldhøi

MORFEUS arkitekter

The architectural expression of the new “Villa Fjeldhøi” is contemporary and tailored to the specific situation. The roof slopes upwards from east to west, thus opening towards the main view, the evening sun, and garden. The sloping of the roof is also done to keep building heights down in consideration of surrounding neighbors to the east. Once a freestanding property, the area has become densified over the past 100 years and the property is now surrounded by homes. The different neighboring houses are however slightly diverged in plan and height, ensuring sun, view, and partial privacy for each property.

casa rio

PAULO MERLINI ARCHITECTS

The project results from the remodeling of an old farmhouse.

By disassembling the poor materials of the old facade we discovered that the house was actually made up of three small
houses built according to the needs of the former owner.

This was the key premise for the creation of our project. Maintain the structure of the original volumes and assume their original shape uncovered, unifying them through a slab perforated by a central patio, that fills with light the entire social area located on the ground floor.

A garden roof finish on the central slab offers a new intimate garden to all rooms and private areas of the house.

cuckoo’s nest

BetweenSpaces

The entire narrative of this house is constructed around the idea of playfulness and pragmatism. The name Cuckoo’s Nest, alludes more to the playful imagery of Cuckoo’s clock. The proposed design interprets the typical layering in south Indian temple complex, where the inner sanctum is surrounded by layers of pillared verandahs and the outermost layer of tall fence. This layering helps in gradually taking people from the chaotic outdoors to the serene and quiet indoors in a sequential manner.

the house in silesia

Gornik Architects

The house is surrounded by fields, meadows and forests. The object consists of three simple ridge roofed buildings shaped like traditional houses. They were functionally divided into garage, art studio and home building. The main conditions for this project we took into consideration were the functional arrangement, plot’s exposure to sunlight and topography. The wide driveway and the garage emphasize public wide-open area. Then we move to the art studio and home building. The last was situated simultaneously to both buildings, in the distance enabling comfortable crossing to the private space. That is why between the buildings we’ve got the walking route leading us to the private space, revealing at the same time interesting architecture perspectives and surrounding landscape view.

courtyard DADU

Robert Hutchison Architecture

this DADU (Detached Accessory Dwelling Unit) is oriented around a north-facing courtyard to provide privacy from the street as well as a quiet exterior space. Providing protection and a sound barrier from the nearby freeway located one block away was a key directive driving the design. Large window apertures in the south facade draw southern daylight into the living room, kitchen, and courtyard throughout the day.

nature spa and wellness resort

Open AD

The idea of the resort is based on maintaining local traditions by adapting them to modern standards, thus opening them up to a wider public. This has guided all phases of development, from architecture to services and the smallest detail.

The two current sauna buildings stay true to tradition in terms of purpose (cleansing the body, mind and soul), but Open AD enhanced aesthetics and functionality. Therefore, the Glass Sauna, for example, is accessible to persons with reduced mobility.

A timely addition in 2020 are the three corten steel and glass cabins. Inspired by the tiny living movement and Japanese ways of life, the cabins are minimalist but packed full of functionality. A pop-up tea table rises from the floor for enjoying herbal tea post-sauna. For overnight stays, a bespoke foldaway bed is easy to operate. Mezzanine level sleeping space makes the cabins suitable for families. All throughout, the dominant materials are wood, metal and natural fabrics like linen. The main hero is the natural landscape outside, which floods through the glazed front of the cabins.
