granny flats

Though guesthouses are often reserved for wealthy clients and the upper class, they reveal unique relationships between space, landscape and privacy. Drawing together 10 guesthouses and granny flat plans, the following projects exemplify this niche form of residence around the world. Made with diverse materials and programs, they illustrate how people can inhabit weekend getaways and long-term living quarters in plan. Together, the projects showcase housing that’s specifically catered to a smaller scale of domestic life.

bringing it home-a new “perch”

adding a front porch is a rewarding exercise. the experience of sitting in your front porch watching neighbors walk by while sipping your favorite beverage and savoring the moment has become something of a luxury in this fast-paced world. if rooms were defined by what you did in them (eg: “bed”room, “living” room), then the front porch should be renamed, the front “perch”

Below are some views of the proposed new “perch”

bringing it home-the inspirations

adapting to a new country is a unique experience. All of us immigrants have done it at some point in our lives. Adapting to a new home is tougher. Home is where we want things to be as close as possible to what we know, love, and cherish-we try to bring it home in things small and large-from paint colors to attached bathrooms.

this project to me is about creating space where only air exists. Space that the owners can use to recreate, relive and re-cherish their memories of their home-i hope to help them bring it home!

the job at hand-a front porch, sunroom, a 2nd level deck and larger bedrooms-easy as pie!

as always, lets start with some inspiration…

chalet on powder mountain

Jo NagasakaSchemata Architects

Structurally, the lower floor is constructed with steel frames to maintain an appropriatedistance between the slope and the building, and a highly insulated wooden structure isplaced on top of the steel frames to protect the indoor environment. The expression ofthe wooden materials harmonizes and integrates with the surrounding land and stonesin summer, and evokes the warmth of home against the white snow in winter.
