DADA Partners

three distinct but interconnected garden courts that bring the surrounding orchard into the home. They emerged as the team considered how to best create a structure that would frame the trees. One court emerged near the north-facing driveway, making it the arrival court. There’s another in the west, with the third in the east near the swimming pool. Beyond the pool lies a large swathe of green that extends out into the rest of the property. Various seating options placed around the courts encourage the residents to sit back and enjoy the great outdoors.

10 modern farmhouses

Taking old things and making them new again is architecture’s seemingly endless challenge, one that sparks inspiration for designers and architects around the world. Lately, a new crop of work has displayed clever takes on what is perhaps residential architecture’s most classic motif: the farmhouse. The modern farmhouse uses common elements from traditional pastoral buildings—timber cladding, A-frame roofs, and lofted spaces—and puts a sleeker spin on them for a home that’s streamlined but still connected to its natural surroundings.

chukum

architects are reviving an ancient Mayan stucco technique for contemporary buildings, merging modern architecture with regional history and culture. The technique is called “chukum,” a term derived from the colloquial name for the Havardia albicans tree native to Mexico. Made with chukum tree bark, the material has several defining qualities that separate it from traditional stucco, including impermeable properties and a natural earthy color.
