mid-century modern facade makeover-flippin it over

once the design is approved, there is an important next step-other than to celebrate!

documenting design is a unique art. as the author of the project, the documents not only tell the story of the design, but also a guide and a step-by-step assembly of instructions. To do this, you have to know how the project will be put together and then disassemble it and bring it all together in a series of plans, elevations, sections and details.

trace paper is a great way to rough out the process. i start with a quick sketch of the structure I want to document and then i typically like to “build” on paper, almost like a “flip-book” and then separate them into instructions.

the below is what i did for this project. hope it helps explain the process.

floating walls

Crest Architects

An introverted open plan layout has been adopted to create a seamless flow of spaces and to ensure connectivity across the floors. Designed around two landscaped courtyards, the building program is spread across three floors consisting of a parking area, formal and informal living, an open kitchen and dining, five bedrooms, a study and a semi-open terrace with a kitchenette. Both the courtyards have been strategically designed with skylights to bring in maximum light.

walden house

Formative Architects

There is no space as room in this house. All of space on the 1st floor have organic form and structure, also they are opened toward the courtyard. The yard is a background which includes expanding all function of this house and a space which plays a centripetal part. Entire space connecting kitchen – entrance – living room is opening toward courtyard, thus all space are bright and warm also are interconnected compactly with courtyard visually and spatially.

filtered frame

Matt Fajkus Architecture

Part of this experiential and structural frame includes the perforated stainless steel screen on the north and south faces of the dock. Thousands of unique, laser-cut perforations were shaped and distributed along the surfaces using parametric scripting. Their size and location is based on desired sight lines, direct solar exposure, shade, and relationships with the rise and run of the stairs and roof slope, all while providing structural reinforcement for the overall frame.

a touch of personality

I love grids, and the scale and structure it provides. but I am also not trapped by a rigidity that one assumes with grids-i call it more of a guide than a grid. I sketch all my ideas on grid paper, but I ran out of it last week.

(i will “pen” a separate post on my writing and drawing materials…:))

To help me out in a pinch I decided to print a grid/dot paper of the internet. once I got hold of a good template, I took it to the next level by personalizing it with color to imitate various paper backgrounds, the official logo, and some well-appointed coffee and ink stains. In the week I have had it, its become a huge part of my brand, but I also loved the idea of having this online, so I can sketch on my computer-talk about 2 birds with one stone

black house

Dualchas Architects

persuasive integrity to the rigorous use of pure rectangular forms, the strictly limited palette of colour and materials, and the consistent purity of minimalist detailing throughout, which enriched by the inclusion of the art and artefacts of the owners, have succeeded in creating a calm, inviting and exceptional home.
